Individual Psychotherapy

Other Therapy Techniques

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing

If interested in psychotherapy services, the following essentials will be the cornerstone of therapy.Identity exploration, emotion regulation, communication, boundary setting, & improving self esteem. Once clients are able to become emotionally anchored and return to baseline functioning, trauma processing can begin.

If interested in EMDR, we will be following the protocol closely to ensure we receive the results proven through statistical studies. A pre-requisite for client's to be recommended for EMDR is 3-6 months of individual therapy, sober from drugs or alcohol for 6 months or more, no experience of suicidality with an intention or a plan. More information on EMDR can be found below.

Although individual psychotherapy and EMDR are the main services we offer, we also use the  following research based therapy treatments to prepare for trauma processing: Mindfulness, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy techniques, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy techniques, Positive Psychology techniques, Triple P Positive Parenting techniques, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques, Psycholinguistics techniques, Seeking Safety techniques, and many others.

INDIVIDUAL PSYCHOTHERAPY

"The Task Of Knowing Thyself"

Psychotherapy can be beneficial to individuals seeking the following:

1) Identity Exploration (exploration of how one perceives themselves, others, and the world. Exploration of external influences on individual identity).

2) Emotion Regulation (learning how to identify and express emotions. Learning grounding/coping skills to control emotions)

3) Communication & Boundary Setting (learning how to communicate assertively, rather aggressively or passively. Learning how to set healthy boundaries, teaching people how to respect you and treat you within all identities of your life).

4) Improving self-esteem (how to engage in praise and validation, how to honor and listen to your intuition, increasing gratitude attitude, learning how to celebrate yourself and prioritize yourself).

EYE MOVEMENT DESENSITIZATION REPROCESSING (EMDR)

What is Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy and how does it work?

EMDR is an 8 phase treatment that aims to help people process their trauma in a short period of time, without having to talk about their trauma in detail.  Using Bilateral Eye Stimulation (BLS), EMDR therapists are able to help an individual unlock the traumatic memory in the area of the brain that processes and stores information. Together, client and clinician will process the trauma experienced in the past, as well as present, and will restore the memory of the trauma in a healthy way.

This will allow for the individual to recall the traumatic memory but will no longer trigger the individual to have disturbing emotions, thoughts, and body sensations when recalling the experience.

How is Bilateral Eye Stimulation (BLS) used in EMDR?

In order to unlock the part of the brain that is storing the traumatic memory, as well as the emotions, thoughts and feelings that accompany the memory, therapists commonly use two fingers and ask individuals to follow their fingers from a left to right motion. I utilize an online BLS simulator rather my body to perform BLS. I find it is more consistent, reliable, and more efficient than my arm. Eye movements are recommended, although tapping and auditory stimulations have also been proven to help individuals unlock the part of the brain that is storing the traumatic memory. Auditory and tactile features are included in the online BLS simulator.

Is EMDR guaranteed to heal me from my trauma?

Although I have yet to work with a client that reported EMDR was not working for them, EMDR is just another intervention that may or may not work for you. Your responsiveness to EMDR will depend on a variety of internal and external factors, most importantly, how willing, open and free you are to the concept of letting go of your past.

How will EMDR help me become the best version of myself to live my best life?

Through using EMDR to change the brain, people can turn unhealthy and self-destructive thoughts into healthy and positive beliefs and behaviors that will better their lives.

The EMDR Institute reports: Multiple studies show that 84%-90% of single-incident trauma survivors became free of symptoms after only three 90-minute sessions. For combat veterans with PTSD, one study showed 77% became symptom-free after 12 EMDR sessions.
